2011 Worlds: Davis/White win gold

US ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the World Championship gold after their tango performance in last night’s free dance competition. 2010 Olympic gold medallists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, from Canada, took silver with the latin-inspired routine. US team Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani took the bronze.

John and Sinead Kerr did not participate in the event, which had to be postponed after the devastation caused by the Japanese Tsunami ruled out original hosts Tokyo. The Kerrs paved the way for Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland who finished in 16th place, and Louise Walden and Owen Edwards who placed 20th.

As for Team GB results elsewhere in the competition, ladies competitor Jenna McCorkell qualified for the free skate competition and finished 24th. David Richardson missed the men’s free skate qualification by 3 places, and finished 33rd overall. Pairs team Stacey Kemp and David King missed the free program by one place, and finished 17th overall.

KIDC members win synchro medal

Adult skaters at Hull Arena are certainly a dedicated bunch, which might explain why 9 of our KIDC members are valued squad members with the Northern Stars, Hull’s first and only adult synchronised skating team.

Established in April 2009, the synchro team has gone from strength to strength, competing in front of thousands in the Hull Arena’s 2009 festive show, ‘The Spirit of Christmas on Ice’. Ever since, the team have been perfecting a 3min 30sec routine in order to fly the flag for Hull at national competitions. The team picked the Trophy D’Ecosse, incorporating the Scottish Synchronised Skating Championships as its first competitive outing on 16/17 April 2011.

Held at the newly-refurbished Dumfries Ice Bowl in Scotland, the Trophy D’Ecosse is open to teams from all over the world. The event hosted 43 teams from all over Great Britain, with 4 teams from Iceland and Italy. In total nearly 1,000 skaters, coaches and team officials, not to mention a sizeable crowd, passed through the Dumfries Ice Bowl during the 2-day event, which also welcomed Judges and Technical Panels from around the world, including New Zealand, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Holland, France, Czech Republic, Denmark and Italy. Several officials travelled directly to Dumfries after judging at the ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Helsinki 9-10th April.

The pitched the Northern Stars against seasoned teams from Slough and Bracknell, together with a newly-formed team from Blackburn. Watched by famed ice dancers John and Sinead Kerr, the team took to the ice on the eve of its second birthday, and performed their 1920s-inspired routine with a flair and energy that was amplified by the adrenaline of competition. The team took a solid second place against stiff competition, taking the highest technical marks of the category and falling less than 1.5 points behind former British Champions Adult Fusion from Bracknell.

Buoyed by their success, the team are already back in training, making their routine even more challenging ahead of the British Championships which is expected to be held in February 2012.
