Join Us

KIDC has enjoyed a resurgence of membership in recent years, both from adults and children. We are always looking for new faces! You are welcome to come and watch a session for free before you try it out – please feel free to come and chat to us.

If you’re looking for membership forms, you can find them here.

Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions…

What age do I need to be?

We have no age restrictions. If you are under 18, you will need to be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian.

What standard do I need to be?

You must have passed Skate UK level 10 – you will need to bring your signed grade sheet to the first session before you can come onto the ice. Certificates and badges will not be accepted. You will also need to have your own boots.

For skaters who have not done Skate UK, e.g. those who learned to skate before the introduction of the scheme, you will be allowed onto the ice at the discretion of a KIDC member. You must be at the equivalent of a Skate UK level 10 pass. For clearly experienced skaters this should not be a problem, though if we may require you to undergo an assessment by a coach.

Why do you have a minimum standard?

For safety reasons: to ensure that skaters have the ability to adhere to club rules (for example giving way to other skaters with priority), and have the basic skating skills to be able to skate and stop safely.

For new skaters, ice dancing is challenging as it requires good glides on one foot, speed and good edges. If you meet the minimum standard, you will be able to adapt to these challenges more easily.

How much will it cost?

Your first three sessions are free. You will be required to complete a membership form on your fourth session, but we will waive your first annual membership, which is currently £15. From your fourth session and onwards, you need to pay £4 entry at the reception.

Will you teach me?

KIDC does not offer formal teaching – our Tuesday night sessions are recreational and are there for everyone to dance and improve their own skating. Having said that, we are a friendly and sociable club, and you will receive lots of encouragement! All of our new skaters tend to learn by following more experienced dancers on the ice to learn the patterns and steps. You can also download the patterns and watch videos on our site to learn off-ice. We have notices up at the Zamboni entrance throughout the session, and you can often find details of ice dance camps and seminars.

Where do I go?

KIDC members gather at the Zamboni entrance between 8 and 8.15pm on Tuesdays. Please come and ask for a committee member, and we’ll be happy to help.
